Benefits of Aloe Vera

Benefits of Aloe Vera.

Aloe Vera: The Miracle Plant.

Everybody knows aloe vera is great for cuts and sunburns, even bug bites. It's been called the "First Aid" plant. Aloe vera's soothing gel inside the thick, succulent leaves is an incredible natural skin care "product." But what about the rest of the body: are there benefits for your insides too? Actually there are some very powerful benefits from the aloe vera plant. No one plant offers all the health benefits of the aloe vera plant.

Aloe vera is a semi-tropical succulent plant originally from North Africa, and now grown worldwide. It looks like a desert plant. Aloe vera is one of the oldest and most popular medicinal plants known to man. It's mentioned in ancient documents, including the New Testament, where it was used with other herbs for embalming!

What's In Aloe Vera That Makes It So Special & Valuable?.

The aloe vera plant is constructed with the basic building blocks of life, including essential vitamins and minerals, proteins, polysaccharides, enzymes, and amino acids. (Some people drink aloe vera for physical endurance and stamina, instead of energy drinks!) The bulk of the aloe vera leaf is filled with gel, which is approximately 99% water. The other 1% contains over at least 75 known nutrients including 20 minerals, 12 vitamins, 18 amino acids, 200 active plan compounds called phytonutrients, enzymes and of course, water.

The Benefits of Aloe Vera.

Aloe vera's incredible effects upon the skin were "re-discovered" in the 70's and it became wildly popular. It's now used worldwide in just about every skin and hair care product imaginable. You see, aloe vera gel is an excellent skin moisturizer. It supplies oxygen to the skin cells which in turn increases the strength and synthesis of skin tissue. It rejuvenates the skin, hydrates it, and makes it flexible.

Aloe vera is a potent natural medicine - and there is more and more evidence to show its effectiveness in the treatment of some of the most serious diseases..

Did You Know?

Aloe vera is one of the most powerful antioxidants to occur naturally. Many of today's most common diseases have been associated with a deficiency of antioxidants. Your antioxidant level is capable of determining your biological age, and even your expected lifespan! So, is it any wonder why people are seeking aloe vera and products made with the aloe vera gel?

What Other Things Can Aloe Vera Do?

Following is a list of only some of the uses of aloe vera. The research is ongoing and there may be more to come. But right now the healing powers of the phenomenal aloe vera plant is undeniable.

1. Aloe vera is an antioxidant and cancer fighter, especially   colon cancer
2.Reduces and stops inflammation, both internally and  externally
3.Oxygenates blood and energizes cells, hydrates skin and repairs skin tissue
4.Aloe vera heals internal digestive problems such as irritable bowel syndrome, constipation, acid reflux - cleanses the intestinal tract
5.Reduces risk factor for strokes and heart attacks by making "sticky" blood "unsticky," and boosts the oxidation of your blood, plus circulation
6.Alkalizes the body, helping to balance overly acidic dietary habits
7.Boosts cardiovascular performance and physical endurance
Stabilizes blood pressure and reduces triglycerides

There is undeniable evidence now from scientists and herbalists about the benefits of aloe vera³. They tell us only what our ancestors have known for centuries and passed on to succeeding generations. With today's technological advances, we know more about the dangers as well, and how to use aloe vera safely and effectively.

How To Choose the Best Aloe Vera Products..

1.Research different Aloe Vera products. Due to the increasing popularity of aloe vera, demand has unfortunately brought a lot of poor quality products to the market. The typical aloe vera liquids available in retail today are extremely weak, and most are damaged by heat and chemicals during processing. They're formulated with less of this low grade aloe vera, which which doubles the negative impact. This is my personal favorite Organic Aloe Vera Juice.

2.Read your labels carefully. Unfortunately the huge disparity in quality, efficacy, purity, and potency between all the different product brands of aloe vera is not always obvious. Read your labels and do your research. Make sure your products have a high Aloe Vera content.

3.Purchase organic aloe vera plants. Be sure you get plants that were organically grown, not genetically modified or treated with toxic chemical pesticides.

4.Grow your own. That way you can be sure of the organic cultivation, and they are attractive, too.

10 Tips for Healthy Natural Hair

10 Tips for Healthy Natural Hair

You can make your very own organic, natural hair products at home for a fraction of the cost of most product lines. It’s easy to create organic shampoos, conditioners, and hair masks right in your kitchen. Completely natural, non-toxic hair products offer hydration, nutrition and stimulation to the scalp and hair.

Here are some of my favorite tips for getting and keeping the best natural-looking healthy hair. I would love to hear all of your personal tips for healthy hair.

1. Make an Herbal Hair Mask

Combine 1 teaspoon of triphala powder with 1 tablespoon of aloe vera gel and a small amount of water until a paste is formed. Wet hair and apply paste to scalp and hair. Leave on for at least 20 minutes and rinse.

2. Use Natural Sesame Oil Conditioner

For dry hair, rub a small amount of organic sesame or olive oil on broken and split ends. Cover hair in a plastic bag or a shower cap and leave for at least 45 minutes, or up to overnight. Shampoo and rinse well.

3. Keep Hair Clean, Not “Over-Cleaned”

It’s important to have clean hair but over washing can leave hair brittle and void of natural lubricating oils. Wash hair every other day or every third day.

4. Don’t Drink Beer – Rinse With It!

Pre-shower, give your hair a rinse with 1/4 cup of flat organic, high-quality beer. Leave the beer in the hair for 15 minutes, then rinse with a natural shampoo as normal.

5. Try a Basic Baking Soda Wash

Simply giving your hair a weekly baking soda rinse will help rid the hair of the layers of chemical gels and environmental pollutants that can attach to the hair throughout the week. It also gives the hair a vibrant glossy feeling and may even lighten it. Add 1 tablespoon of baking soda to your hair while doing your normal shampooing regime.

6. Try a Sandalwood Powder Hair Mask

Add 2 teaspoons of organic sandalwood powder to 3 tablespoons lime juice. An excellent cooling summer hair mask. You may also replace sandalwood with licorice powder, or combine both into a mix.

7. Use a Coconut Oil Conditioner

For dry and brittle hair, increase moisture by giving yourself a coconut hot oil treatment. Massage a small amount of warm coconut oil (organic and cold-pressed if possible), into scalp and through ends. Cover and let sit for at least 30 minutes, and then shampoo and rinse as normal. You may need to wash twice to get out all of the oil.

8. Use Essential Oil Remedies

Avoid harsh chemical sprays. Rosemary essential oil is an excellent de-tangler. Rub a few drop into your palms and then through damp, tangled hair. You can also put a little rosemary oil on your hair brush for de-tangling action.

9. Eat for Healthy Hair

Drinking purified water and eating a healthy, organic, plant-based diet helps healthy locks. Avoid processed foods with chemicals and preservatives that strip body and hair of healthy, natural glow.

10. Use a Castor Oil Deep Conditioner

For extra conditioning and healthier hair, add 2 teaspoons of castor oil to one egg white. Massage the oil-egg mixture into wet hair and scalp. Leave for at least 25 minutes before rinsing.

Switch to all natural hair care products. I use Max Green Alchemy and have great results. Doing a full body cleanse will also help improve the health of your hair.

How to Look Naturally Beautiful

How to Look Naturally Beautiful.

1 Eat healthy. Eat healthier things like fish and fresh fruits and vegetables. You can still eat other foods but lower on the intake of fat, sugar, and calories. Some foods have empty calories. Avoid them as much as possible. Try not to eat too much junk food such as potato chips, pizza, cookies, cakes, etc.

2 Consume healthy liquids: Make sure to take in plenty, i.e. 4-5 liters, of cool water (of course lessening the daily intake of alcohol is a huge help in getting that natural look). Water flushes away the toxins and gives your skin that natural glow. Avoid drinking caffeinated drinks.

3 Exfoliate your skin to waken it up and give you a healthy glow. Only exfoliate your skin once or twice a week, though. Over exfoliating can make you more prone to breakouts.

4 Smile. You'll reveal a new you. Avoid drinking Pepsi,Coke etc. They stain your teeth giving your smile a yellow look.

5 Moisturize your skin daily. This will keep your skin soft and will also keep your skin beautiful as you get older.

6 Skip the foundation unless you really, really need it. Heavy makeup hides true beauty! Work on your skin instead, applying coconut oil to your face before you turn in for the night will smooth and clear your skin tone plus it treats acne. Add some pink blush to the apples of your cheeks (smile when you're putting it on). Swipe on chapstick to your lips to keep them lush looking.

7 Wear clothes you feel good in, and that define your features. Try to avoid wearing clothes that do not flatter your figure. You don't need to religiously stick to every single fashion tip you come across (most are quite boring anyway) but do take the time to learn how to bring out the beauty of your unique figure.

8 Always keep your hair brushed. To keep it in place during the day, spray on a little leave-in conditioner. Keep your hair neatly groomed. Use organic shampoo and conditioner, and avoid anything with sulfates in it. To get rid of residue, occasionally add a little baking soda to your shampoo. Always wash your hair with warm to lukewarm water, never hot. Hot water strips off all the natural oils. Depending on the season, style it so that you are comfortable and your hair is protected from environmental hazards.

9 Get your eyebrows waxed (or pluck them yourself- but make sure you know how to do it correctly) to open up your eyes. But don't pluck them too much, over-plucked eyebrows can be just as bad as messy ones! Look up some guides on how to pick the right eyebrows for your face shape first, and if you're still not sure then go to a beautician and ask their advice.

10 Stand tall with great posture. Roll your shoulders a few times to feel where they should be. Keep your chin up. Keep your head balanced atop your shoulders, avoiding "forward-head posture."

11 Make sure to get at least 8 hours of sleep each night.

12 Get fresh air and exercise. Both will give you a healthy glow.

13 Have a healthy diet that includes fruit, vegetables, protein, and enough water. Don't starve yourself or try to force your body to be thinner than it naturally is; it won't work in the long run and you could end up with serious health problems.

14 Sun protection. When outside protect your skin with a sunscreen. make sure you apply the sun sunscreen at least 15 min before you step out into the sun

15 Brush your teeth and keep good dental hygiene to have a bright smile.

16 Be confident. If you don't feel confident, pretend that you are until you learn to really feel it. If you look confident, you will always be truly beautiful!

17Exercise regularly to maintain your fitness.

Top 10 Tips for Preparing Your Home For Sale

Top 10 Tips for Preparing Your Home For Sale

1. Looking through someone else’s eyes

We can never see our own mistakes in our home as we are always surrounded by them and it is easy to have the blinkers on. Get real and take the time to walk around the house as though seeing it for the first time. Even get a friend to walk through with you and get them to point out all the bad things they notice. You need to have a tough skin and accept what they say, as buyers will only tell you the truth by walking the other way.

2. First impressions always count

As cliché as it sounds, as soon as the buyer walks through the front door what they see will leave a lasting imprint as what to expect for the rest of the home. Bring up the standard of presentation at the entry and make sure the rest of the house lives up to the expectations you have created.

3. De-clutter and storage

No one wants to see someone else’s mess, especially if you are walking into a place you want to see yourself living in. Put away unnecessary knick-knacks into boxes and clean out your cupboards. Yes, people will open the doors and they don’t want to catch what’s falling out of them! Take up short-term storage and pack away those extra boxes, bikes and furniture you don’t need. You want to give the illusion of more space, not how much you can cram into one area.

4. Photos

I hate the word de-personalise, as we all know some one lives in the house and we want the feeling of a warm inviting home environment. Minimise the family photos, especially the blown wedding picture staring at you from the bedroom. That makes people uncomfortable and feel like they are invading. Keep a small section of family photos to one area of the house only and arrange nearby other decorator items such as vases and flowers to take the focus off just staring at the people who live there.

5. Lighting

There is nothing worse than walking into a dark house - it gives a negative feeling as though you are creeping around. It might be just a case of new paintwork but if it is more than that put a few lamps around and keep them on during the day for openings. It not only provides extra lighting but gives a special ambiance to the room.

6. Paint

Nothing freshens up like a brand new paint job. If unsure what scheme to chose neutrals are always the best way to go. Soft whites, stone and yellows are the easiest to blend and co-ordinate with. But if you feel a need for colour, paint a whole bedroom or study area a different colour from the main rooms as a break in the neutral scheme. Putting in bright feature walls just for the sake of adding colour can more often be off-putting if not done to co-ordinate with the rest of the house.

7. Furniture Arrangement

We all know our own floor plan and how to move about the house, but bring strangers through in groups and they may be bumping into the furniture and only going away with bruises. You need to be aware of the walking traffic that will be going through your house on open days and move your furniture accordingly. Remove as many obstacles as possible from door entry/exits and be aware of large chunky furniture that may clutter up the room.

8. Hire Furniture

You might like the cushiness of your couch and the five beanbags your friends sit on for movie nights but this doesn’t mean best presentation. Consider reducing the amount of your own furniture and investing in some hire furniture to finish the house off. New and well-presented furniture give a fresh sense of life to the interior.

9. Maintenance

Keep an eye on the small jobs around the house that you never got around to. People notice the dodgy light fitting, the door that doesn’t close properly and fraying edges of carpet. It is fair to say a lot of people only finish their house when they are selling but it is essential to get these jobs done as no-one will take on other people's unfinished business.

10. Fragrance

We have all caught on to the fresh-baked bread and the coffee brewing to add a sense of ‘home’ to the interior but as smell is one of our heightened senses it still has a role to play. Fresh flowers not only give life and add a touch of romance to a place but scented flowers such as lilies and roses are subtle mood lifters when buyers walk by. It is easy to get accustomed to the smell of our beloved four-legged friends but buyers will smell the scent straight away. Have your carpets and rugs cleaned and ask them to put a scent in the cleaner. You may even consider to have the animals kept outside or away with friends for the duration of the campaign. This is a tough decision but the overwhelming smell of animals can be a major reason for the buyer to not consider your property

How to Apply Eye Makeup in 8 Steps

When evening calls for a glamorous look, you want to focus on making your eyes amazing. Here's how to apply eye makeup in only 8 steps.

Here's How :

1 . Prep your eyes with concealer Concealer can be used to cover up undereye circles or just the bluish discoloration just under your inner eye. To cover dark undereye circles, apply three dots of concealer under each eye. Start at the inner corner where skin tends to be darkest, then under the pupil and the third on the outer edge. Pat, never rub with your ring finger (this finger tends to have the softest pad) until it disappears
.
2 . Apply eye base to your lid Eye base is the secret to keeping your shadow in place for hours. Without properly priming your lid first, your eyeshadow will likely end up a greasy line in your crease.

3 . Apply shadow. It's great to use a three-toned shadow and build from lids to brow. Allowing them to blend into each other like a rainbow is gorgeous, according to celebrity makeup artist Mally Roncal. Start with a light color that almost matches your lid. Sweep the color across the lid and up to your browbone. Follow with a medium color across your lid only. Build on this with a darker color in the crease. Blend the colors well.

4 . Follow with eyeliner Dark eyeshadows work great as eyeliners. Wet a slanted brush, then dip in a dark eyeshadow. Line eyes as close to the upper lashes as possible from the inner corner to the outer corner. Follow with liner on bottom eyes, but only line from the middle of the eye out. Smudge the bottom line with a Q-tip or your finger.
You don't want a prominent line. For a smokey eye, use a brush to pat in a dark eyeshadow along the upper lid and below the lid. You don't want a stark line,

5 . Brighten your eyes with a highlighter This step involves only the inside part of the eye. With a gold or pink highlighter (white is too bright), draw a v-shaped shape that follows the inner corner of your eye from top to bottom. Blend with your fingers. This will help make eyes 'pop.'

6 . Highlight your brow Take the same highlighter and dab it on your browbone, concentrating on your mid-brow outward. Blend with your finger.

7 . Curl lashes An eyelash curler will make even long lashes look more gorgeous. For added effect, you can heat the curler under a blowdryer for a couple seconds. Test curler before applying to lashes because you could burn yourself.

8 . Apply mascara Place the wand of your mascara brush at the bottom of lashes and wiggle back and forth. Follow with another few sweeps of the wand. Apply to bottom lashes as well.

COMPLETE COCONUT OIL TIPS

COMPLETE COCONUT OIL TIPS

Research has now shown that coconut oil is a healthy saturated fat that supports immune system function.  Coconut oil contains lauric acid, which is a proven antiviral, antibacterial, and antifungal agent and it is easily digested and absorbed.

This is why it works well for conditions such as Crohn’s disease, irritable bowel syndrome and coeliac disease where digestion is a problem for many people.

The anti-fungal aspect of coconut oil helps to kill candida in the gut which is common problem for people with digestive issues.

The great benefit of coconut oil is that it helps the body eliminate toxins as well as improving digestion and assists with the absorption of beneficial nutrients from our food. When more nutrients are absorbed this aids the body at cellular level and supports the immune system.

Coconut oil is reported to enhance metabolism and for many people this helps them to achieve their ideal body weight in conjunction with regular exercise and a healthy diet. Because metabolism is enhanced, the thyroid gland which produces hormones that regulate metabolism, by using coconut oil, this can be helpful in treating Hypothyroidism an underactive thyroid.

There are a number of published studies about the effect of coconut oil on metabolism.  Dr. Ray Peat, a biochemist and proponent of coconut oil for thyroid patients says;

“An important function of coconut oil is that it supports mitochondrial respiration, increasing energy production that has been blocked by the unsaturated fatty acids. Since the polyunsaturated fatty acids inhibit thyroid function at many levels, coconut oil can promote thyroid function simply by reducing those toxic effects. It allows normal mitochondrial oxidative metabolism, without producing the toxic lipid peroxidation that is promoted by unsaturated fats. Coconut oil added to the diet can increase the metabolic rate.”

The best coconut oil to buy is one that is cold or expeller-pressed and unrefined. It’s a safe oil to use it for cooking as it has a high burning point.

Enhancing the natural flavour of foods, its consistency and great taste make it a useful oil when sautéing, or frying or used with curries and Thai style dishes. You can also use it in dessert dishes and baking.

Virgin coconut oil becomes cloudy below 24c and solid below 18c to liquify, you will need to place the container in warm water.

Six easy ways to add the benefits of coconut oil to your daily diet…

1 – Add a tablespoon of coconut oil to your favourite breakfast smoothie
2 – Add a tablespoon  to  buckwheat or quinoa porridge with a drop of stevia
3 – Use as a spread on your favourite gluten free crackers or bread
4 – Use coconut oil for your stir fries & curries – works wonderfully with Asian & Indian flavours
5 – Roast vegetables with coconut oil & sea salt – Delicious!
6 – Mix coconut oil with raw cacao powder and stevia for a delicious, healthy chocolate topping or dipping sauce

Six great beauty tips for coconut oil.

1. Cleanse away the day’s build -up of dirt and pollution by massaging coconut oil into your skin and gently removing the oil that has lifted the dirt away with a damp flannel. Coconut is anti-bacterial and anti-microbial, so it is perfect for protecting and enhancing the skin’s natural flora.

2. If your locks are looking more like straw than silk, massage coconut oil into damp hair to help strengthen them and add luster.  Put your locks up into a shower cap and wrap a warm wet towel around it.   Leave for twenty minutes and shampoo as normal.

3. Pop your feet into a warm footbath laced with three tablespoons of coconut oil.  Add some mixed spice and coconut milk to enrich this rejuvenating foot soak. The lauric acid in coconut oil may assist with fighting fungal infections, and bring balance to your hard working feet.

4. Rich in moisturizing fatty acids, coconut oil makes a superb moisturizer, plus you’ll smell delicious too. Massage it into your whole body and don’t forget your décolletage for a balmy evening out – to add a gorgeous glisten to your skin.  To enhance the glow add some sparkling mica to your oil mix.

5. Babies love to be massaged with coconut oil. Highly moisturizing with both anti-bacterial and protective properties, take some precious time out with your little one and coat them in this nourishing oil.

6. Is your skin feeling a little parched and flaky?  Add some sea salt to your coconut oil and use it as a scrub for the body.  Your skin will feel rejuvenated, soft and glowing within minutes.

Coconut Oil Beauty Tips

Coconut Oil Beauty Tips

Coconut oil is the healthiest oil you can find on the market. Maybe you are surprised, but it really is. I'm always very open for new things to try out in my kitchen. If there's a grain or vegetable I didn't know of yet, it won't take long until I bring it home to taste :-) And this is how I discovered coconut oil. Unlike conventional fats this tropical treasure bursts of health benefits and is a true beautifier. People in tropical countrys use it every day for all kinds of purposes but also for their skin care.

Why Coconut oil ?

Coconut oil contains a high percentage of saturated fatty acids, more than 50 % of it is Lauric acid. This ingredient has a very positive effect for our health because it strengthens the immune system and enables the body to fight against all kinds of infections and viruses. Conventional fats only contain very little or none at all and are less beneficial for our well-being. But that's not all ! It can also help you to lose weight. The medium fatty acids in coconut oil are clearly better digestible which results in less fat deposit in the fat cells and it encreases the metabolism which burns off calories and let you lose weight.

Here you learn more :-)

Unfortunately negative campaigns in the past have been the reason why people did not want to use it for consumption anymore. It was blamed to cause high colesterol levels in the blood, but research has proven the opposite. The regular use shows very positive results in the treatmejavascript:void(0)nt of diabetes because it reduces high blood sugar levels. And because it is free of long-chain fatty acids it does not collect in the bloodstream, which keeps the blood vessels free of deposits. Studys have also shown that the consumption of this tropical oil positively improved the condition of dementia patients, and it has a anti-viral effect on the HIV virus.

That shows that saturated fats are not unhealthy, they are not the reason for coronary heart diseases, overweight or clogged arteries. The truth is that the food industry wants us to believe it. Fact is, that people who grow up eating foods prepared with coconut oil enjoy a much better health. The reason for this are the fatty acids and the anti-viral properties. Our body simply benefits from it a great deal. But there is even more to this tropical wonder !

Skin Care Benefits

Coconut oil contains vitamin E and is a fantastic product for skin care. It smoothens dry, flaky skin and can be very helpful in cases of psoriasis, acne and other skin problems. And it is extremly suitable for body massages, your skin will be soft like a baby:-) Because it is completely chemical free you can use it for your facial skin care and benefit from its anti aging properties. People in tropical countrys apply it on their skin and never get sunburned because it blocks the damaging effects of ultraviolet radiation. What else can we ask for ? It's simply great !

The valuable nutrients will make your hair silky and shiny again. Gently massage a little amount into your hair and scalp, cover with a towel and leave it in for about 15 to 30 minutes. Then shampoo your hair as usual. You can leave the cure in over night too, if you like. Your hair will be looking soft and healthy. This is also a very helpful treatment against dandruff and itchy scalp.

Mix half of your sun lotion or cream with this tropical oil. It is an anti oxydant and resists free radicals. This way you have a very good protection against sun damages.

Rough lips ? No Problem, just apply some on your lips and they become soft again. Ready to kiss :-)

Because it has the ability to penetrate in the deeper layers of the skin, it strenghtens the tissues and helps to reduce the signs of premature aging. You will have tighter and younger looking skin with less wrinkles when you get older. Your skin will have a moisturised and smooth appearance which makes you look young and vital.

Yummy Yummy !

When you cook with coconut oil you provide your body with healthy medium-chain fatty acids (MCFAs). They are easily digestible and send directly to your liver where they are converted into energy, but not into fat. Which means, less love handles :-)) Different with long-chain fatty acids (LCFAs). They are more heavy for your digestive system because they need proteins and enzymes to carry out a good digestion. Fat and colesterol is stored in your body which can lead to several diseases.

Best thing to do...cook healthy with saturated fatty acids. Important is that you choose a product of high quality.

Good Coconut oil should be * cold pressed * unrefined* no bleaching * no chemicals * made of fresh coconuts *

Due to its high heat stability, it is ideal for frying and baking, as well as for salat dressings and much more. Make a good choice for your health and beauty today and enjoy the great health benefits.

I personally found out so much positive things about this wonder of nature in this book, written by Dr. Bruce Fife, that I decided to introduce it to you. I'm sure you'll be amazed what you will find out. The information simply stops with all the myths about this tropical oil and tells you the amazing truth about all its great benefits for young and old. Read more about.

5 Top Tips to Protect Your Brain

5 Top Tips to Protect Your Brain

1. Take B vitamins

All vitamins help keep the body running like a well-oiled machine, but your brain, in particular, benefits from Bs. New research highlights the importance of B vitamins in protecting seniors from stroke and dementia, two main causes of disability in the elderly. Specifically, B vitamins can help quench homocysteine, an amino acid that damages blood vessels. In 2002, a study published in Stroke: Journal of the American Heart Association found people with moderately high levels of homocysteine had a more than fivefold increased risk of stroke and a threefold increased risk for Alzheimer’s disease compared to those with low levels of the substance in their blood.

Vitamin B3 (niacin) also has been linked to brain health. Researchers at the Chicago-based Rush Institute for Healthy Aging found in 2004 that seniors with flagging levels of niacin were more likely to suffer from Alzheimer’s than those with niacin to spare. Although researchers have yet to pinpoint what’s going on, they suspect that B vitamins protect and nurture dendritic growth, a key component of the nervous system and brain health. “You’ve got to get in the habit of taking B vitamins every day,” Weiss says.

2. Try ginkgo

Extracted from the ancient ginkgo tree, ginkgo (Ginkgo biloba) is considered the best of all brain-boosting supplements on the shelf. Studies of people with Alzheimer’s disease show that ginkgo enhances blood flow to the brain and ameliorates memory recall. It also adds tone and spring to aging blood vessels. In addition, ginkgo is a potent anti-inflammatory and antioxidant. “Ginkgo will be one of the most valuable herbs for the next 100 years,” Weiss says.

For minor memory loss associated with aging, take 40 to 60 mg of ginkgo biloba extract (GBE) three times a day. For Alzheimer’s disease, up each dose to 80 to 120 mg three times per day. Ginkgo is generally safe for long-term use; however, the extract does thin the blood and can clash with some medications, especially blood thinners. So if you take prescription drugs, consult with your doctor before tossing ginkgo into the mix and make sure not to take it before a surgery.

3. Watch inflammation

Inflammation comes to the rescue when the body is hurt or ill, but the immune system’s Dr. Jekyll can morph into Mr. Hyde if the inflammation switch gets stuck in the “on” position.

Chronic inflammation, whether from an irritated bowel, inflamed gums or autoimmune disease, weakens arteries in both the heart and the head. Making the arteries more vulnerable to rupture, the damage opens the doorway to heart attack and stroke. The key to prevention is keeping an eye on the early warning signs. “Inflammation is cumulative. It may end up in the blood vessels, but that’s not where it starts,” Weiss says. “If you have inflamed joints, gums or gastrointestinal tract, your whole body is loaded, and the immune system will hype up heart disease progression.”

The good news is you can combat inflammation naturally by bulking up on specific foods, herbs and supplements. Start with omega-3-rich fish. People who eat two servings a week of coldwater fatty fish, such as mackerel, wild salmon and tuna, cut their risk of heart attack, stroke and Alzheimer’s disease, according to dozens of scientific studies. If you aren’t a fish fan, consider taking fish oil supplements ( between 1,000 and 2,000 mg daily). Other supplements to help douse the fire include turmeric (400 to 600 mg three times per day) and ginger (500 to 1,000 mg twice per day).

If you’re still concerned about inflammation, ask your doctor to test your C-reactive protein levels (CRP for short). A blood marker for inflammation, levels of CRP creep up as inflammation heats up. Although the CRP test is not yet considered standard fare, its use is becoming more mainstream. Two studies in the January 2005 issue of The New England Journal of Medicine indicate CRP may be as important as cholesterol in establishing cardiovascular risk. The CRP test is most useful for people with a moderate heart disease risk whose cholesterol levels are seemingly normal. As more doctors subscribe to the importance of uncovering inflammation, CRP tests may rival cholesterol tests as a diagnostic tool.

Another test to consider is one that measures levels of white blood cells (WBC). After studying the link between high levels of WBC and heart disease in the 72,000 participants of the Women’s Health Initiative, authors of a study published in the March issue of Archives of Internal Medicine concluded that unusually high levels of WBCs may be useful for detecting heart disease in otherwise healthy-looking people. (Food allergies, especially to wheat, gluten and dairy, also create inflammation in the body over time; so does over reliance on nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs and antibiotics.)

4. Exercise your brain

You know exercise ensures muscular brawn, but it’s easy to forget the brain’s need for heavy lifting. The importance of performing mental gymnastics was first foretold by a 2002 study published in JAMA. For the research on mental acuity and aging, scientists at the Rush Alzheimer’s Disease Center recruited 801 Catholic nuns, priests and brothers from around the United States. All were at least 65 years old, and none had a clinical diagnosis of dementia. The seniors completed a survey designed to measure, among other things, how much time they devoted to seven different activities, ranging from watching television to playing card games. Over the next 4.5 years, the scientists periodically evaluated the seniors’ brainpower for signs of slippage. During the study, more than 111 participants were diagnosed with shades of Alzheimer’s. When researchers compared those struck by the disease with their activity level, they found that those who flexed their mental muscles the most were 47 percent less likely to develop Alzheimer’s than those who taxed their brains the least. Weiss wasn’t surprised by the results. “In the brain, there is a big, big difference between watching television and reading a book,” he says. “Your brain makes new neurons when you process information. I see lots of older folks who are readers stay sharp while those who watch TV melt into the couch.”

5. Get diabetes under control

If you have diabetes, you have extra incentive to pamper your brain. Diabetes puts people at a higher risk of dementia. Experts know that diabetes is damaging to blood vessels, but they are just beginning to understand the relationship to dementia. A groundbreaking study published last March in the Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease confirmed not only that the brain makes insulin but also that people who die from Alzheimer’s disease lack insulin in key areas of their brains. “Some people think of Alzheimer’s disease as diabetes of the brain,” Whitmer says. “More and more evidence shows that insulin plays a direct role in the neurodegeneration seen with Alzheimer’s.”

If there’s a final analysis to be made here, it might be that while eating right, exercising and taking vitamins and supplements might not be, as Weiss says, a rocket-science Rx for heart and brain health, it’s one each of us can follow with relatively little pain in exchange for considerable long-term gain.
